So You Are in Charge

Being a good leader is not easy. There are hundreds of books on leadership and I have read many of them. After 30 some years of leadership, I have seen and experienced many positive traits a leader should have and several pitfalls that a leader should avoid. I have personally had good leaders and bad ones. I feel at times I was not the leader that I should have been.

So all wrapped up in this book are some very simple truths that can help become a great leader. By the way, you do know that there is a difference between a leader and a manager, right? I have known people that micromanage Lincoln off of a penny but couldn’t lead a team. Good leadership makes management a breeze.

Pure managers are often missing the fact that the team that they lead are human beings. “How dare you call off on a busy day like today just because you have a fever of 103 and spent all night in the emergency room. Have you ever seen me call off?” It’s OK to be like that if it’s your fax machine that is not working but it is not OK with people.

Respect is so important in being a good leader. Your team has to respect your position but that only goes so far. The rubber starts meeting the road when they start respecting respect as a person. That respect has to be earned by consistent, fair, and dependable treatment of your team.

This book has no studies or intricate models to follow. Just some good human based common sense steps to take to become a great leader. Your team will love you reading this book, and so will you!
